2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51! Testing the New High Tech Vette! [Ignition Episode 77]

Finally! On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago gets behind the wheel of Chevrolet’s hotly anticipated 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51, the most technologically advanced production Corvette ever made.

First, Carlos heads to the test track to put the reborn 460hp V8-powered Stingray through the full barrage of Motor Trend’s instrumented tests: 0-60 mph acceleration, quarter mile, 60-0 mph braking, lateral acceleration, and figure-eight.

The raw data backs up what Carlos can already feel from the driver’s seat - the 2014 Corvette goes fast, stops quick and handles corners with ease. Then, its off to the winding roads of Central California to see how the C7 Vette’s continuously variable-locking differential, magnetic damping, rev matching and other high-tech features perform in the real world.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Edition 507 Wagon! The Modern Hammer Wagon? [Ignition Episode 76]

On this episode of Ignition, Jonny Lieberman travels to Germany to drive a car we don’t get, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Edition 507 Wagon.

Through the winding roads of the Black Forest to the mean straights of Germany’s notorious Autobahn, Lieberman puts the 507 horsepower, 450 pound-feet of torque super wagon through its paces.

The question isn’t whether or not a wagon fanatic like Lieberman likes the 507 wagon (he does), but if the new AMG grocery hauler can live up to the legend that came before it, the mighty Hammer Wagon.

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed! The Incomparable British Luxury Coupé [Ignition Episode 75]

On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago tests the Bentley Continental GT Speed.

With 616 horsepower, 590 lb-ft of torque, and a claimed top speed of 205 mph, it’s the fastest production Bentley ever. Unfortunately, it also weighs a staggering 5181 lbs.

Can this powerful, but heavy coupe offer any driving satisfaction beyond outright speed? We take it to the test track and the road to find out.

2014 Porsche Cayman S! Is the Lightest Porsche Now the Best Porsche? [Ignition Episode 73]

On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago gets behind the wheel of the newest iteration of Porsche’s Cayman line, the 2014 Porsche Cayman S. After some twisty road driving, Carlos meets up with pro driver Randy Pobst at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to discuss the capabilities of the new Cayman on the track. It’s track ready, balanced, and can go from 0-60 in 4.2 seconds… but is it worth it’s fully loaded six figure price tag?

First previewed on its Boxster platform-mate, and shown at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, the new Cayman looks more aggressive than its predecessor. From the 918 Spyder-aping looks to the scalloped air intakes on the doors to the silicone-injected hips, the car looks buffer. It’s larger, too. The wheelbase has been stretched by 2.4 inches, while the overhangs on either end have been shortened by 10mm. Overall length is only up 0.1 inch. The track has been widened 40/12mm front/rear.

2014 Bentley Flying Spur: Uber-Luxury Sedan Makes its Mark in China! [Ignition Episode 68]

On this episode of Ignition, Jonny and the team head to Beijing, China to both drive and ride in Bentley’s newest premium luxury sedan, the Flying Spur.

Although the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur has dropped “Continental” from its name, the sedan has more content and refinement than ever before. As was the case with the original Bentley Continental Flying Spur, the sedan is arriving roughly two years after the Continental GT coupe.

With all of the hype and pressure riding on this new Bentley Sedan, will the New Flying Spur be able to stack up against it’s predecessors, it’s bigger brother the Mulsanne, and also the elements of rural and inner-city China?

2014 Nissan GT-R Track Pack: Godzilla Levels Up! [Ignition Episode 67]

On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago and Randy Pobst head to the track with the most extreme GTR yet, the 2014 GTR Track Pack.

Unlike in previous years, the 2014 GT-R does not receive any power or torque upgrades, so its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 produces the same 545 horsepower and 463 lb-ft of torque as it did in 2013.

That’s not to say that Nissan left the VQ38DETT alone — the engine receives new injectors that provide more torque on the high side of the rev range and an oil pan baffle that stabilizes oil behavior and pressure when the car is being driven hard.

The six-speed, twin-clutch gearbox and Atessa all-wheel-drive system remain unchanged.

2014 Jaguar F-type: Finally, an E-type Successor! [Ignition Episode 65]

On this episode of Ignition, Kim Reynolds heads to Pamplona, Spain to have a look at some of Jaguar’s classic entries in the sports car realm, and also to get his hands on their latest convertible sports car, the F-Type.

The F-type has an all-aluminum body and a new all-aluminum, 3.0-liter supercharged direct-injection V-6 based on the 5.0-liter V-8, with balance shafts, a dual independent variable cam timing system, and a Roots-type twin vortex supercharger mounted in the engine’s vee.

Jaguar has given us three different versions, the V6, V6S, and V8s, to play with, so we’re taking them out to the mountains of Spain to see which one best represents Jaguar’s new spiritual E-type successor.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA: Affordable Luxury? [Ignition Episode 63]

On this episode of ignition, Frank Markus heads to Saint Tropez to test out the CLA, which is Mercedes-Benz’s brand new entry into the youth market.

The idea sounds fraught with danger: another sub-$30,000 Benz, this time with a 2.0l 208hp transverse engine, 258 lb-ft of torque, and a front-wheel drivetrain.

Will this new entry level kinder-Benz find the same fate as C230 sport coupe from several years ago, or is this a completely new philosophy on an entry level luxury car?

New 2014 SRT Viper TA Strikes Back! [Ignition Episode 58]

2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE: Best Handling Camaro Ever! - Ignition Episode 48

On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago tests the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE. Carlos puts the 1LE through Motor Trend’s instrumented performance tests, then hands the keys over to pro driver Randy Pobst at Willow Springs International Raceway to see how it tackles the track.
