GM Crash Test Safety - From Also Ran to Top Rated in Just 5 Years

Consider the Cavalier to Cobalt to Cruze. The Safety improvements are momentous and it is only getting better.

Rear Impact Crash Dummy design by award-winning GM safety engineer could dictate the future of crash test safety for those not just the driver and passenger up front but passengers in the back as well.

Anyone remember the Chevrolet Cavalier whose last model year was 2005? Back on the pre-2011 National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, it scored a reasonable 4 stars but earned just 1 star for front driver side crash protection.

By the time the 2010 Cobalt was being put out to pasture (thankfully), GM was still earning 4 stars on that older NHTSA test but had increased those horrific drivers’ side crash test scores from 1 star to 4…

2013 Chevrolet Global Cars (2012 Moscow International Motor Show)

This year’s edition of the Moscow International Motor Show (August 29) in Russia is picking up steam with plenty of automakers having chosen the event to host their world and European debuts.

Chevrolet will perform the European premieres of three new models including the Colorado pickup truck, its 7-seater Trailblazer SUV sibling and the Cobalt compact sedan.

General Motors didn’t say if and in which other European countries it will offer the three new models.

Joining the European premieres are two Russian debuts, the Chevrolet Cruze Station Wagon and the Malibu global mid-size sedan. Also on display will be the Corvette Stingray concept and Youth Concepts, while Chevrolet will showcase its new infotainment system called ‘MyLink’.

At First, Manchester United, And Now With Liverpool: Chevrolet Liverpool Official Sponsor

Only a few months after Chevrolet become the official automotive partner of the Manchester United Football Club, the Detroit-based carmaker announced that it went into a similar four-year agreement with the Liverpool Football Club.

Chevrolet’s partnership with The Reds runs to the end of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League and European campaigns, and includes marketing promotions for the brand at Liverpool’s home ground at Anfield as well as the Club’s print and digital publications and fan sites, and player appearances for commercial opportunities.

Meanwhile in Russia: Now That’s Some Crazy Russian “Говно”

One thing we’ve learned from all these dashcam videos is that it if someone stops in front of your car, you had better be prepared for a fight or a very, very quick getaway.

The driver of the baby blue vehicle in this video failed to slow down in a normal manner upon seeing a black Chevrolet Cruze entering the freeway. No big deal, right? Wrong.

While most people would not think much of such an episode, the Cruze driver begged to differ. A few miles down the road, he slams on the brakes forcing the following driver to veer onto the other side of the road to avoid crashing into the Cruze.

The driver of the light blue car says something to the man in the Cruze who quickly makes a U-turn and comes out of the car along with two of his friends who try to open the door and break the window.

It’s almost like a scene out of a movie from there on with the driver trying to make a run for it in…reverse!

Official: 2013 Chevrolet Cruze Station Wagon (European Version)

The Cruze SW is 4,655 mm long, 1,797 mm wide and 1,521 mm tall with the included roof rails and boasts 500 liters of boot space up to the window line and 1,478 liters with the rear seats folded.

Other tidbits include a luggage compartment cover that retracts fully into a cassette, a tray with three storage compartments that’s located between the rear seatbacks and the cassette for the luggage cover and two additional storage compartments in the wheel arches.

The introduction of the estate brings a mild makeover for the other two body styles, the four-door sedan and the five-door hatchback, and two new engines for all Cruze models.

The styling tweaks on the outside concern the front end that gains a an angular drawn grille with horizontal slats and a redesigned bumper with vertical fog lamp housings, while there are also new alloy wheel designs.

Inside, Chevrolet has introduced an available new MyLink infotainment system. Cars that come with the new system will feature a new seven-inch high-resolution touch screen located in the integrated center stack. Other changes inside include a greater choice of seat finishes and some minor tweaks to the instrument panel.

Under the hood, in addition to the existing 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter gasoline and 2.0-liter diesel engine, Chevrolet is enhancing the European range of the Cruze with a new 1.7-liter turbodiesel and a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.

While Chevrolet has made no mention of the North American version, we see no reason why the styling changes won’t be applied in the coming months.

Chevrolet Prepares Consumers for U.S. Arrival of Diesel-Powered Cruze with Facts and Figures

Ask any European about the benefits of diesel engines in passenger cars and invariably the answer will be about fuel efficiency and increased reliability over gasoline units.

It has taken Americans more than two decades to re-embrace diesel engines after a catastrophic attempt in the 1980s, but thanks to German automakers like Volkswagen, Mercedes and BMW, and let’s not forget, the rising cost of fuel, oil burners are on the menu again.

While das Germans have done most of the job of informing U.S. consumers about the new generation of diesels and how they differ from their sooty and finicky counterparts of the past, GM took a moment to introduce its side of the story as it prepares for the domestic launch of the Cruze Diesel, which arrives next year.

GM starts by telling us that according to market research firm Baum and Associates, U.S. sales of diesel cars have the potential of doubling by mid-decade.

Currently, diesel cars account for 3 percent of U.S. sales having jumped 35 percent in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011. Last year, overall diesel car deliveries surged 27 percent over 2010.

General Motors said that the U.S. market Cruze Diesel will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit.

While the Detroit automaker did not elaborate further, chances are it will be closely based on the European engine that delivers an output of 161hp (163PS) and 360 Nm (265.5 lb-ft) of peak torque.

When equipped with a manual gearbox, the European Cruze 2.0D returns a fuel consumption of 7.3lt/100km (32.2mpg US) in the city, 4.2lt/100km (56mpg US) on the highway and 5.4lt/100km (43.6mpg US) combined.

The respective fuel economy figures for the automatic transmission model are: 8.7lt/100km (27 mpg US) city, 5.0lt/100km (47 mpg US) highway and 6.3lt/100km (37.3 mpg US) combined.

Keep in mind, however, that the fuel economy ratings are for the Euro model on the European driving cycle, and not for the upcoming U.S. market model.

The Blues Brothers’ Chevrolet Cruzemobile

In celebration of Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary, the firm’s British arm decided to pay tribute to the legacy of The Blues Brothers by crafting a special one-off model of its Cruze sedan named the “Cruzemobile” that echoes the look of the famous “Bluesmobile”.

Adding to the celebratory theme, Chevrolet hired its own band named “Cruze Brothers” that performed live set to a crowd of more than 500 guests at the Ace Café on London’s famous North Circular Road.

Chevrolet said that it hopes to use the Cruzemobile for marketing purposes.
